Handgun Curriculum

Please note: A user can opt to test out of TTC course prerequisites, by completion of a similar course and satisfactorily demonstrating the appropriate level skill set to a TTC Range Officer. This assessment is by appointment only.

NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

This is the new NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course which introduces the student to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. Through this course, the students will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety, and pistol shooting activities. The Basic Pistol Course will also help prepare the students for participation in other NRA courses. Phase II is conducted at the TTC; you must register and perform the online material through the NRA website to attend this Phase, which is a basic pistol course.

TTC Handgun 101 for Women

Introduction to the Basic Function, Operation, and Maintenance for the new female handgun owner/user. This course, taught in part by women for women, provides the new female handgun user with basic information of how handguns function, ballistic information, how they are safely and effectively operated, how they are maintained, and how this pertains to the female user. The course will include video clips of firearms usage along with hands on demonstration and active participation of basic handling. Finally, each student will be assessed and given additional advice and drills on how to maintain these newly acquired skills. As a result, the female handgun user will be better informed and trained on how to properly select a firearm and use a handgun that meets their present needs.

TTC Basic Handgun, Handgun 101

An introduction to the Basic Function, Operation, and Maintenance of handguns for the new owner/user. This course provides the new handgun user with basic information of how handguns function, ballistic information, how they are safely and effectively operated, and how they are maintained. The course will include classroom demonstration and interaction, hands on demonstration and active participation, and basic handgun handling. Finally, each student will be assessed, given additional advice, and supplied with drills on how to maintain their newly acquired skills. As a result, the new handgun user will be better informed and trained on how to properly select a firearm and use a handgun that meets their present needs. A rental firearm may be acquired if the student does not currently own a handgun.

Defensive Handgun 210

An advanced class for the handgun user. Here the user will develop a skill set for operating and accurately firing a handgun. Clearing malfunctions, position shooting, and self-defense considerations will be taught. This course provides the handgun user with advanced information and shooting techniques. Demonstration of a given technique or philosophy will be provided. Live-fire shooting drills and assessments will be the primary method of instruction. The user will build upon the platform of instruction given at Basic Handgun courses. Introduction to drawing from a holster, reloading and malfunction clearing with an emphasis on shooting accurately will be incorporated into the skill set. An introduction to self-defense will also be taught.

Defensive Handgun 320

An advanced handgun class for the handgun user who has acquired the skills of shooting accurately and operating the handgun under most circumstances, as in Handgun 210. In this course, an emphasis will be placed on self-defense with the pistol. The user will be instructed on the use of cover/concealment, room clearing, target discrimination, tactical reloads, an introduction to team shooting, and an introduction to close quarter battle.

Defensive Handgun 435

Close Quarter Battle. This is a “no-holds-barred” course focusing on Close Quarter Battle and self-defense. The emphasis will be on armed and unarmed self-defense, unarmed self-defense transitions, shooting without the use of sights, and shooting at extreme close distances from different positions and platforms.
