Handgun Curriculum

Handgun training is the cornerstone of our training program at the tactical Training Center of NJ.  Our goal is for you to be comfortable in handling and operating a handgun in the “360 degree environment” of your home.   We want to provide you with the information that you need to make the best selection of a handgun and the best education on how to effectively operate, store and shoot a handgun that will protect you, your family and your freedom.

NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

This is the new NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Course which introduces the student to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. Through this course, the students will learn about pistol parts (nomenclature) and operation, ammunition, gun safety, and pistol shooting activities. The Basic Pistol Course will also help prepare the students for participation in other NRA courses. You must register and perform the Phase I online material through the NRA website, and then attend the range portion of the course which is Phase II, conducted at the TTC.  The TTC will provide rental handguns and all other necessary range equipment.

TTC Basic Handgun, Handgun 101

This is an introductory course for the new owner/user. This course provides the new handgun user with the fundamental principles of how handguns function, ballistic information, how handguns are safely and effectively operated, and basic marksmanship skills. The course will include classroom sessions and live-fire range time. At the conclusion of the course, each student will be assessed and provided with information on how to maintain their newly acquired skills. As a result of this course, the new handgun user will be better informed and trained on how to properly select and use a firearm. All necessary equipment, including firearm rentals are included.

TTC Basic Handgun 101 for Women

This is an introductory course for the new female handgun owner/user. This class is similar to the TTC Basic Handgun 101 but includes additional information and was designed specifically for women.  Because handgun manufacturers design and build firearms for the masses, this may create some obstacles when selecting, operating and shooting a handgun, with smaller hands.  This course was designed to show both conventional and alternative means of selection, operation and use of a handgun.  As a result, the new female handgun user will be better informed and trained on how to properly select and use handgun. All necessary equipment, including firearm rentals are included with the cost of the course.

TTC Intermediate Handgun 150

This course is for the Basic Handgun graduate, who desires additional work on their shooting skills foundation. The primary concentration will be on the continuing development of handgun marksmanship and handgun operation. This is a great course to increase your marksmanship skills. Let our instructors show you the handgun operation and marksmanship short-cuts.  We will also help identify and correct marksmanship errors.  This course requires a handgun, at LEAST 3 magazines or 2 speed-loaders, eye/ear protection and a long-sleeve crew-neck type shirt. At least 200 rounds of ammunition are required.
Prerequisite: TTC Basic Handgun 101, NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting, or a similar basic handgun course.

Defensive Handgun 210

This is an advanced class for the handgun user, who has established marksmanship skills. Here the shooter will continue to develop a skill set for handgun operation and accuracy under stress. Immediate action drills, precision shooting, and the foundations of self-defense will be taught. Timed live-fire shooting drills and assessments will be the primary method of instruction. The shooter will build upon the platform of instruction given at Basic Handgun courses. Introduction to drawing from a holster, reloading, malfunction identification and immediate action drills will also be taught. The student should provide their own handgun, at least three magazines, a holster, range safety gear, and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Defensive Handgun 250

This is an advanced class for the handgun user, who has established marksmanship skills and wishes to expand upon the platform of skills learned in Handgun 210.  Additional Immediate action drills, precision shooting, and the continuation of self-defense will be taught. Timed and structured live-fire shooting drills and assessments will be the primary method of instruction. Skills concerning drawing from a holster, reloading, malfunction identification and immediate action drills will also be refined and coached. The student should provide their own handgun, at least three magazines, a holster, range safety gear, and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Defensive Handgun 320 – Handgun Home Defense – Force Options

This class is a combination of legal use of force information, handgun operating skills, tactics and other important information.  The classroom session will provide information such as the legal application of force (both deadly and non-deadly force options), firearm terminal ballistics, 911 and police interaction, and the tactical use of a handgun.  The range portion will provide information and tactics for one-person building clearing.  The student should provide their own handgun, the gun safe or case that they use in their home, at least three magazines, Eye/Ear protection and range appropriate clothing.  200 rounds of ammunition are also required.

Defensive Handgun 350 – Handgun Home Defense – Low Light

This class combines the Use of Force considerations discussed in Defensive Handgun 320 under low-light circumstances, skills which are necessary when defending a home.  The range portion of the course will provide a foundation for low-light vision considerations, low-light shooting techniques, target identification, defensive handgun skills incorporating the use of a flashlight and non-lethal force options.  The student should provide their own handgun, at least three magazines and a flashlight with a pressure release switch or preferably a firearm mounted flashlight, Eye/Ear protection and range appropriate clothing.  200 rounds of ammunition are also required.

Defensive Handgun 435 – Close Quarter Defense

This course focuses on close quarter battle, self-defense and the defense of others within close proximity. All of the skill sets obtained in the previous classes will be incorporated into this class.  The emphasis will be on armed self-defense, immediate action drills, tactical movement, Use of Force situations, and shooting at extreme close distances from different positions and environments. A handgun, firearm-mounted flashlight, holster, long-sleeved crew neck, eye/ear protection, knee and elbow pads are optional, at least three magazines and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Defensive Handgun 450 – Close Quarter Countermeasures

This course focuses on close quarter battle, self-defense and the defense of others within close proximity. All of the skill sets obtained in the previous classes will be incorporated into this class.  The emphasis will be on unarmed self-defense, handgun retention, advanced immediate action drills, tactical movement and communication, and incorporating the use of firearms with an assistant, Use of Force situations, and shooting at extreme close distances from different positions and environments. A handgun, firearm-mounted flashlight, holster, long-sleeved crew neck, eye/ear protection, (knee and elbow pads are optional but recommended), at least three magazines and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Tactical Handgun Clinics

Our Tactical Handgun Clinics are one day clinics of approximately 2 hours of training where we emphasize the basic skill building drills and techniques of tactical shooting skills.  There are no prerequisites for these courses but you should have safety and operation fundamentals in place before you attend a clinic.  These clinics are skill-building in nature and are offered to get the shooter out of the ports and onto a real range setting so that you can build upon and maintain you basic “360 degree real world” shooting skills.  The clinics emphasize standardized unloading/unloading, safety and combat marksmanship utilizing established Minimal Acceptable Standards of Performance.  Student should have at LEAST 3 magazines, but more are recommended. Also needed is at least 150 rounds of range friendly ammunition (see range rules), eye/ear/long sleeve high collared shirt, baseball cap. These are a fast paced skill building clinics, and are appropriate for beginning, advanced and handgun operators. Targets are provided. Usually limited to 12 students.

Holster Certification Class

This is a two hour instructional training session that will instruct the student how to safely and tactically draw a handgun from a holster and present the firearm to the target.  Students who successfully complete this class will be able to participate in the special “Holster Draw” range sessions at this range.  These “Holster Draw” Range sessions will be posted on this calendar.  This class is designed to augment the upcoming Concealed Carry Permit classes.
